Assessments

CandLE assessments can be carried out either in person or remotely and allow us to evaluate a student’s learning potential and the most appropriate systems and equipment to help them to achieve it. 

We provide a full detailed report with recommendations and suggested support for the student. We aim to maximise the student’s learning potential and support their communication needs. CandLE assessments are carried out by qualified CandLE teachers who have expertise in access to the curriculum for students who rely on AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)

At CandLE, we favour a dynamic assessment approach which focuses on the student’s learning potential rather than what they appear unable to do. Base-line assessments can present serious problems for students who are unable to easily demonstrate their understanding, so we avoid these wherever possible. Instead, we look at what the student can do with appropriate help indicating learning potential. We also take into consideration what they show interest in, what excites their curiosity and what we can do to foster and support their aspirations. 

We will aim to visit the student in their educational environment and observe them working with their current support systems and then have a one-to-one session to carry out an assessment that is tailored to identify their needs. This can include:

• Cognitive assessment of the student’s verbal and non-verbal understanding. 

• Single word reading assessment. 

• Word comprehension assessment. 

• Spelling assessment. 

• Math’s access assessment. 

• General curriculum access assessment including differentiation and adaptation needs. 

• Communication needs assessment.

An important element of the assessment is consideration of the software and equipment that will best meet the student’s learning needs. CandLE staff ensure that they stay current in their knowledge of the software, equipment and resources available to meet the learning needs of the student who relies on AAC. 

We can also support students who have not yet met the criteria for an NHS communication assessment. We can provide training and activities for the student to develop their skills towards meeting that criteria.
