Curriculum Support

We offer specialist support for students with accessing the curriculum within mainstream schools, special schools and for students learning from home.

We have hubs based all over the UK and are also able to support students and schools remotely. Each hub has qualified teachers and teaching assistants who are trained in AAC and are able to adapt the curriculum to maximise the learning and access of each student.

At CandLE our focus is not the limitations but the learning potential for every student! We offer support for any student at any age or level whether they are just beginning to engage with sensory experiences, beginning to learn to read or preparing for GCSE or equivalent.

Through assessments we can identify what the student needs to learn and to progress.

We offer support to students who are already in mainstream education. This can be through a specialist teachers supporting students and giving regular input to the school, supervising teaching assistants and advising on differentiation and adaptation of tests and exams.

Our teaching assistants offer one-to-one support for students during lessons as well as continued adaptations so that they are able to access the same work as their peers. We work with classroom teachers to make lessons accessible for AAC users to play an active part in the classroom with their peers.

CandLE offer sessions at home, where we can develop and adapt learning programmes to suit the individual needs of the student and this can be done in person, with one-to-one support from a teacher or teaching assistant.

There has been an increasing demand for students to be taught from home and in some cases remotely. Throughout the pandemic we have continued to support students and have developed effective methods to deliver remote teaching sessions through Zoom.

We can work with the family or home support to ensure a continued home education programme that is effective for the student. This is known as Education Otherwise when supported by the local authority and as elective home education when not supported by the local authority. We are carrying out Education Otherwise support in several regions of the UK.

Students who rely on AAC to communicate will often have other addition impairments such as movement difficulties, learning difficulties and working memory problems. By ensuring that the activities require the student to use as little physical effort as possible and including the appropriate arrangement on a page, we can ensure that the students working memory is not compromised.

We aim for the student to access their lessons and learning materials as independently as possible with minimal physical support. We can offer training and guidance for schools in how to create conditions whereby the student can access their work with the least physical effort, maximised engagement with the learning materials and in the most time efficient way. In order to access learning materials, students who rely on AAC need an efficient communication system. Communication can be developed alongside learning and even be enhanced by the learning situation which affords a reason and an opportunity to communicate. It is important that the student has a reliable communication system and that they can use it efficiently to access the curriculum. This is something we can assist with though assessment and through continued support.

We can also provide guidance on how to approach the NHS AAC services for support with communication systems.
