What we do

CandLE is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the learning and communication needs of students who rely on AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). We support students in mainstream and special schools with communication, literacy and curriculum access.

From an initial assessment, we establish the education needs and build a learning experience tailor-made to the individual student and their access requirements.

We specialise in curriculum support at all stages, the teaching of literacy through our own tried and tested literacy programme, AAC resource development and training in AAC education.

Many CandLE students have achieved GCSE’s, A levels, and one of our students is now at university studying maths.

We offer specialist support for students with accessing the curriculum within mainstream schools, special schools and for students learning from home. We have hubs based all over the UK and are also able to support students and schools remotely.

CandLE have devised a literacy programme to support students at every level, from those who have no known literacy skills up to students who are completely literate and require support in mainstream curriculum. We are also able to help special schools implement literacy programmes that all their students can access.

CandLE assessments can be carried out either in person or remotely and allow us to evaluate a student’s learning potential and the most appropriate systems and equipment to help them to achieve it. We provide a full detailed report with recommendations and suggested support for the student.

We provide training for schools, families, local authorities, community groups and for AAC users. We offer training in AAC, use of equipment and software, access to the curriculum, learning theory and the teaching of literacy.

We are a national provider of the AAC City & Guilds. This is a qualification that students can gain in their use of AAC. We are also part of the Exams Access Working Group. This provision aims to enable more students to access recognised qualifications.

CandLE offer a free 30-minute consultation where we can give initial advice and guidance. We can also offer continued consultation as a service should it be required.

CandLE has a team of resource developers that are dedicated to producing learning resources for the students we support. As well as developing our own learning programmes, we also adapt well known resources and textbooks. These resources are available for all CandLE students.
